A new gasifier has been developed by AfricaRice for parboiling. the gasifier can be used for heating water for soaking and for steaming. Steaming with the GEM parboiler takes 20-25 min and the gasifier using rice husk can burn for 35-40 min. However, if the fuel is husk mixed with palm kennel shell, the burning time can go up to 50-60 min. The key recommendation is for each processor to own two gasifier so that as the fuel deminishes in the one running, the other can be started to continue the cooking process. The gasifier uses a locally constructed 12 volt fan powered by a solar recharging battery.
